Once upon a time he used to distribute newspapers to earn his livelihood, but now he is making headlines in all newspapers. He is none other than K B Prasanna Kumar, who defeated four-time MLA and former deputy chief minister K S Eshwarappa in the recently held Assembly elections.
Kumar, a second time councillor from Shimoga city, defeated Eshwarappa.
During his school days, Kumar distributed newspapers to continue his education. When he had been to some localities while campaigning some residents identified him as the boy who used to distribute papers. They also gave him Rs 500-Rs 1,000 for election expenses.
Kumar joined the ATNC College, but could not complete his BCom as he had to look after his family after the death of his father. Kumar worked for a few years in Srinivasa Store in Gandhi Bazar in Shimoga.
Later, he set up an STD booth and fancy store. Under the guidance of former chief minister late S Bangarappa, he joined the Youth Congress in 1992. Considering his service, the Congress gave him ticket to contest the City Municipal Council election in 2006 from Ashok Nagar ward and he won the election.
During this period he had responded to the problems of not only his ward, but also other wards. In 2013, he was re-elected from the same ward. BJP national leaders like Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley came to Shimoga along with Jagadish Shettar and other leaders to campaign for Eshwarappa. KJP president B S Yeddyurappa also campaigned in favour of his candidate S Rudre Gowda. But no Congress leader visited Shimoga and campaigned for Kumar.
