Congress has managed to win three Assembly seats in Shimoga district. Kagodu Thimmappa (Sagar), two-time MLA Kimmane Ratnakara (Tirthahalli) and K B Prasanna Kumar (Shimoga Urban), who has made his maiden entry into the Assembly, are the winning candidates.
Being a senior Congressman, Kagodu Thimmappa is sure to get a berth in the Siddaramaiah’s Cabinet. He has served as the minister for Public Works, Health and Family Welfare and Social Welfare in the earlier Congress governments. Considering his seniority and the fact that he has held many portfolios, Thimmappa is definitely a frontrunner, sources said.
Tirthahalli MLA Kimmane Ratnakar, who has won for the second consecutive time, is another strong contender.
Recently, KPCC president Parameshwara had said that the Cabinet would comprise experienced and fresh faces. If the Congress sticks to this statement, Shimoga MLA K B Prasanna Kumar’s candidature could be considered as he defeated BJP leader K S Eshwarappa.
C M Ibrahim, a close associate of Siddaramaiah, who contested from Bhadravati, was defeated. If his candidature be considered in the name of minority representation, the district may have two representatives in the cabinet.
Meanwhile, MLAs from Gulbarga district Qamarul Islam and Sharan Prakash Patil are banking on their senior position in the party to get a berth in the new cabinet. Ajay Singh and Priyank Kharge are also hopeful as they sons of powerful leaders Dharam Singh and Mallikarjun Kharge.
Malikayya, six-time MLA from Afzalpur constituency, is undoubtedly one of the senior leaders and frontrunners.
Sharan Prakash Patil, three-time MLA and a close aide of Mallikarjun Kharge, is also one of the aspirants.
Five-time MLA from Gulbarga North constituency Qamarul Islam is also an aspirant.
